Using Your Spiritual Gifts in Ministry

HillSong Church encourages our members and attenders to serve by using their spiritual gifts to serve each other and build up the body of Christ.

What are spiritual gifts?

Spiritual gifts are special abilities given to us by the Holy Spirit when we accept Christ as our Savior. We can only use them with the power of the Holy Spirit. They are not natural talents or skills that can be learned, but spiritual gifts can be used along with our talents, skills, life experiences, personality traits, and other characteristics. We are required to step out of our comfort zone since we can't use spiritual gifts in our own strength. Spiritual gifts also demonstrate how God wants the church to function. We're not independent contractors, but members of a team.

Who has spiritual gifts?

Everyone who has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

How do I discover my spiritual gifts?

  1. Prayer—ask God to reveal your gifts to you.

  2. Read Scripture about spiritual gifts.

I Corinthians 12        Romans 12:6-8        Ephesians 4:11-16
I Peter 4:10-11         II Timothy 1:6

  1. Read study books or attend a training class.

  2. Observe how others are using their gifts.

  3. Ask others what gifts they observe you using.

  4. Take a gift assessment survey.

  5. Try using gifts in a particular ministry.

  6. Partner with others in service.

  7. Give of yourself as you serve others in love.

Do my spiritual gifts change?

No, they don't change, but your dominant and subordinate gifts can change places during your lifetime.

What happens if I don’t use my gifts?

  • I don’t grow.

  • I’m disobedient.
  • I can’t be used by God.
  • I am robbing the body (church).

What happens when everyone in the church uses their spiritual gifts?

  • All members will work together in love and harmony.  Romans 12:3

  • The church's witness will multiply.
  • The church will reach unity and its members will grow in spiritual maturity.
    Ephesians 4:11-14, 16

  • The church will grow closer to God and may grow in numbers.
  • God will be glorified.   I Peter 4:10
